Safes are secure, lockable containers designed to protect valuable items such as money, documents, jewellery and sensitive data from theft, fire or damage. Available in a variety of sizes, safes are constructed from reinforced materials like steel, making them highly resistant to forced entry and external impact. They often feature advanced locking mechanisms, including traditional key locks, combination dials or electronic keypads and some modern safes even incorporate biometric access systems for enhanced security.
Fire-resistant safes are specifically designed to protect contents from extreme heat, while waterproof models offer protection from flooding or moisture. Safes can be free-standing or built into walls and floors, depending on the level of discretion or security required. In both residential and commercial settings, safes are a trusted solution for safeguarding valuable possessions, sensitive information and important documents. They offer peace of mind in the face of potential theft or disaster.

Security safes are robust, highly secure containers designed to protect valuable items such as cash, documents, jewellery and sensitive data from theft and damage. Constructed from thick steel, these safes are specifically engineered to resist forced entry. They possess features such as anti-drill plates, reinforced locking mechanisms and pry-resistant doors.
Security safes often come with advanced locking systems, including double-bitted key locks, electronic keypads or biometric fingerprint scanners. Some models also offer dual locking mechanisms for added protection. Many security safes are fireproof and waterproof, ensuring the safety of contents in extreme conditions.
For higher levels of security, safes may be certified to meet standards like Eurograde ratings, which indicate their resistance to burglary attacks. Security safes can be floor-mounted or wall-mounted for extra discretion, making them ideal for homes, offices and businesses where high-value items or sensitive documents need maximum protection against theft and unauthorised access.
For UK home insurance, look for a safe with a tested “cash rating” and a European certification such as EN 14450 (S1/S2) for domestic security or EN 1143-1 (Grades 0–I+) for higher protection. Insurers often use these to guide cover limits and many also recommend bolting the safe down as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
A genuine fire-resistant safe will quote a specific fire test standard and duration (e.g., EN 15659 LFS 30P/60P for paper, or UL 72 classes). A safe that only says “fireproof” without a standard may not protect paper or digital media for a defined time. Match the rating to what you’re storing (paper vs. digital).
You can install many smaller safes yourself, but insurers and manufacturers commonly require fixing into solid floors/walls with the correct anchors, and improper installation can invalidate security ratings. For heavier units or awkward locations, a professional install ensures correct siting, anchoring and compliance.
Security safes are tested against forced entry (e.g., EN 14450, EN 1143-1) and quote a cash/valuables rating. Fire safes are tested for heat/smoke exposure (e.g., EN 15659, UL 72) and quote time/temperature performance. Some models combine both, but always check both sets of ratings if you need burglary resistance and fire protection.
