For UK home insurance, look for a safe with a tested “cash rating” and a European certification such as EN 14450 (S1/S2) for domestic security or EN 1143-1 (Grades 0–I+) for higher protection. Insurers often use these to guide cover limits and many also recommend bolting the safe down as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

A genuine fire-resistant safe will quote a specific fire test standard and duration (e.g., EN 15659 LFS 30P/60P for paper, or UL 72 classes). A safe that only says “fireproof” without a standard may not protect paper or digital media for a defined time. Match the rating to what you’re storing (paper vs. digital).

You can install many smaller safes yourself, but insurers and manufacturers commonly require fixing into solid floors/walls with the correct anchors, and improper installation can invalidate security ratings. For heavier units or awkward locations, a professional install ensures correct siting, anchoring and compliance.

Security safes are tested against forced entry (e.g., EN 14450, EN 1143-1) and quote a cash/valuables rating. Fire safes are tested for heat/smoke exposure (e.g., EN 15659, UL 72) and quote time/temperature performance. Some models combine both, but always check both sets of ratings if you need burglary resistance and fire protection.
